Austin Mehlhorn’s journey into sawmilling began the way it does for many serious timber enthusiasts — with a chainsaw mill and a vision.

Like countless operators, he discovered that while chainsaw milling was rewarding, it was also physically demanding and inconsistent in producing accurate, square lumber. Determined to take his milling ambitions further, Austin began researching professional sawmills, studying systems, watching demonstrations, and imagining what could be achieved with a truly capable machine.

Initially, he considered a bandsaw mill. But the deeper he researched, the clearer the limitations became: log size restrictions, constant blade changes, costly sharpening, dependence on hydraulics, and the need for heavy machinery to handle logs. For someone without a tractor — and with a practical mindset — the economics and complexity simply didn’t add up.

That’s when Austin rediscovered swing-blade technology — and ultimately found Turbosawmill.

The Turbosawmill design immediately stood out. Its open monorail structure, mechanical simplicity, portability, and ability to handle oversized logs without hydraulics made instant sense. Instead of moving logs to the mill, he could move the mill to the logs. Instead of constantly changing blades, he could sharpen teeth in minutes on-site. Instead of fighting limitations, he could cut virtually anything.

One of Austin’s first major tests was milling a massive 55-inch silver maple — a log that would have been impossible for most bandsaw systems. The Turbosawmill handled it with ease.

But Austin didn’t stop at operating the mill — he innovated the business model.

Unable to find any company willing to rent sawmills due to their fragility and complexity, he recognised an opportunity. The Turbosawmill’s robust mechanical design made rental viable for the first time. He launched a sawmill rental operation, offering delivery, setup, training, and support.

The results were immediate.

From homeowners reclaiming fallen trees, to woodworkers sourcing timber, to builders repurposing beams and slabs, Austin’s rental model proved that Turbosawmill could perform reliably in real-world conditions — across dozens of operators and hundreds of jobs.

Today, Beaver Works Leasing LLC operates from southern Maine, providing:

Sawmill rentals

Contract milling

Lumber and live-edge slab production
